Custom patches are embroidered, woven, molded or leather emblems made from your own artwork. With iron-on backing, a heat-activated adhesive on the back melts into the fabric when pressed, bonding the patch in place within a couple of minutes. No sewing machine, no embroidery setup and no minimum garment run.
That's the idea our name is built on. CustomIronOnPatch.com makes custom patches that anyone can apply cleanly, from a parent ironing backpack patches onto a school bag to a print shop pressing 500 hats. When iron-on isn't the right fit, such as nylon jackets or leather vests, we'll tell you and recommend Velcro or sew-on backing instead.

Start with the fabric. Iron-on backing is the fastest choice for cotton, denim, canvas, twill and poly-cotton blends. On nylon, rayon, leather or waterproof fabrics, the heat needed to melt the adhesive can damage the garment, so choose sew-on or Velcro instead.
Next, match the patch type to your design. Bold logos look best embroidered, while small text and thin lines hold their detail better as woven patches. As a rule of thumb, lettering under about 1/4 inch tall is hard to stitch cleanly. For rain, mud or sun, choose PVC.
For embroidered patches, embroidery coverage affects both look and price. At 100% coverage, thread fills the whole patch and raises the stitch count; at 50% or 75%, part of the twill background shows, which keeps detail clean and lowers cost.
Finally, pick your size. Patch pricing is usually based on average size, which is width plus height divided by two: (Width + Height) / 2. A 3" x 2" patch, for example, is priced as a 2.5" patch.
• Iron-on (our specialty): Heat-activated adhesive for cotton, denim, canvas and poly blends. • Velcro (hook and loop): Removable and swappable, standard for tactical and military gear. • Sew-on: The most permanent option, best for leather, nylon and heavy-wash uniforms. • Adhesive (peel-and-stick): A temporary option for one-day events and giveaways. • Magnetic: Holds without pins, glue or heat.
• Merrow border: A thick, rolled thread edge for circles, squares, ovals and simple shapes. Delivers maximum durability against fraying and edge unraveling. • Hot-cut border: A laser-cut edge, finished with a narrow satin stitch, that follows die-cut custom shapes closely. Perfect for complex shapes, sharp contours, and modern apparel.
1. Set your iron to the cotton setting (approx 300°F–320°F) with steam turned off, and let it heat fully.
2. Lay the garment on a hard, flat surface and place the patch adhesive side down. A padded ironing board is often too soft—a firm wooden table protected with a towel works best.
3. Cover the patch with a thin cotton cloth, pressing sheet, or parchment paper to protect the embroidery threads.
4. Press down firmly with steady downward pressure for 30 to 45 seconds without sliding the iron back and forth.
5. Turn the garment inside out and press the back of the patch area for another 30 seconds to drive the molten glue deep into the garment fibers.
6. Let it cool completely (at least 5 minutes), then check the edges. If any lift, cover and press again with firm pressure for 10 to 15 seconds.
For commercial heat press patches: Press at about 320°F for 15 to 20 seconds with firm pressure (40–50 PSI), using a Teflon or silicone pressing sheet over the patch. Allow the garment to cool completely before handling.
Care tip: Wait at least 24 hours before the first wash to allow the adhesive polymers to fully cure. Then wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle, and tumble dry low or hang dry. Avoid extreme high dryer heat.

Yes, when applied with adequate heat, steady pressure and sufficient time! Follow the steps in our iron-on guide above and let the patch cool fully before moving the garment. For uniforms washed daily or exposed to industrial laundry, adding a few perimeter reinforcement stitches or choosing sew-on backing is recommended.
Iron-on patches bond best to natural and blended textiles including cotton, denim, canvas, twill, and poly-cotton blends. Polyester works well at a slightly lower heat with a protective pressing cloth. Avoid heat-sensitive or waterproof fabrics like nylon, rayon, silk, leather, and rainwear; choose sew-on or Velcro for those.
Yes, on cotton and polyester caps! Stuff a firmly rolled towel or pressing ham inside the crown to create a hard, supportive curved surface, or use a commercial curved hat press. Woven and low-profile embroidered patches follow curved cap panels most cleanly.
Yes. Wait 24 hours after initial application before the first wash to let the polymer adhesive cure completely. Then wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry low or hang dry, since intense high dryer heat can soften the adhesive bond over time.
Embroidered patches use thicker thread stitched onto a fabric twill base for a classic raised, 3D textured feel. Woven patches use much finer threads woven tightly together on a loom, making them thinner, flatter, and capable of rendering micro text and sharp intricate details.
It depends on your fabric and intended use. Iron-on is the quickest and easiest for cotton, denim, and poly blends. Velcro (hook-and-loop) suits tactical gear, vests, and patches you want to interchange. Sew-on provides the most permanent hold for leather, nylon, and heavy-wash workwear.
PVC patches last longer outdoors because molded soft rubber is 100% waterproof, mud-proof, and won't fray, fade, or snag under direct sunlight. Embroidered patches deliver a classic timeless aesthetic for apparel and jackets. Choose PVC for outdoor gear and embroidered for classic uniforms.
Most hat patches are 2 to 3 inches wide by 2 to 2.5 inches tall, allowing them to sit cleanly within the front crown panel without creasing. Low-profile dad hats suit 2" to 2.25", while tall structured trucker hats can accommodate rectangular patches up to 3.5 inches wide.
Yes! Custom printed (sublimated) patches reproduce photorealistic artwork and color gradients, 3D embroidered patches use raised foam puff stitching for depth, silicone patches offer flexible sleek branding, and tackle twill provides classic athletic lettering.
